Energy Audits

Energy Audits & Home Energy Assessments

A Complete Home Audit Identifies:

  • A home's energy efficiency
  • Insulation issues/problems
  • Heating issues/problems
  • Air conditioning issues/problems
  • Air leaks and Air leak locations
  • Combustion safety issues

We provide a detailed report of possible corrective measures that can be taken to correct these issues and we'll detail the monetary incentives available from NYSERDA, Utility Companies, etc. to accomplish these corrective measures. Additionally, we'll detail the costs and payback period for the recovery of the cost of repairs and upgrades through energy saved.

An Energy Audit is a complete house inspection conducted by a professionally trained and Certified (by the Building Performance Institute) Building Analyst using a standardized testing process developed by the Building Performance Institute and approved by NYSERDA (New York State Energy & Research Development Authority). It can only be provided by a Certified Building Analyst and through a NYSERDA Accredited Contractor. In this way, it maintains the integrity of the testing process and provides you with reliable, thorough and meaningful test results that you can use to upgrade or improve your home's energy efficiency - and save energy and money in the process. An Energy Audit will culminate in a report given to you that lists the various areas available for improvement, the costs for such improvements and their projected payback periods. You are under no obligation to make those improvements. NYSERDA and many Utility companies, however, offer monetary incentives to make some or all recommended improvements.

The Energy Audit begins with a safety check of the combustion appliances in your home (Boiler, furnace, water heater, stove, etc) to verify that they are not producing Carbon Monoxide and are not depositing products of combustion into your home.

The Energy Audit continues by checking for air leaks in your home by utilizing a sophisticated tool known as a "Blower Door" which is a fan that draws air from your home and determines how much outside air is leaking into your home via openings, cracks, etc. This tool also enables us to determine where these leaks are located so they can be addressed.

Next; insulation levels are checked, heating and cooling system efficiencies are checked, duct systems are checked for air leaks, and lighting and major appliances are evaluated for their efficiency levels.

Finally, a report is produced and provided to you that outlines the results of the Energy Audit and provides specific recommendations for improvements. The cost for each recommended improvement is provided along with the expected payback period or return on investment. Information is provided to you regarding any incentives available from NYSERDA or your utility company to offset the cost to perform each recommendation.

Currently, NYSERDA is offering a FREE or REDUCED COST incentive for homeowners to perform an Energy Audit. Click here for details.
